Lawson Ministries Hamilton is a community based residential program designed to support adults with developmental disabilities. To accommodate the unique service needs of these individuals, staff have developed an innovative, individualized approach to providing day programming. STRIVE (Skills, Training, Recreation, Integration, Vocation, Employment) offers clients a range of opportunities geared to their specific needs and interests. The purpose of STRIVE is to enable participants to realize their full potential and to obtain the highest degree of independence possible.
Excited about the success of this program with the residents of Lawson Ministries Hamilton, the agency wanted to consider the potential to expand this service to individuals living in the community. To that end, they sought and received a grant from the Hamilton Community Foundation to determine the need for day programming and based on that need, to further develop the STRIVE model. Further funding for STRIVE was obtained through the Ministry of Community and Social Services, to privde programs for transitional aged youth, as a bridge from school to community.
There were three components to this undertaking:
1.) Needs assessment and community scan of resources
2.) Development of model of service delivery
     3.) Recommendations and next steps
The approach to completeing this work included: a review of the current literature and existing community reports, interviews with key stakeholders in the community including representatives from local agencies and the Ministry of Community and Social Services.
